After a woman delivers, she should consult with her doctor to decide whether to return to a full dose during the period when she is most vulnerable to postpartum depression.
In 2006, the Food and Drug Administration issued a safety alert regarding the increased risk of persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN) which is a serious and life-threatening lung condition that occurs soon after birth. The alert covered Paxil along with other antidepressant drugs including Zoloft and Prozac. The Paxil label was also revised to include additional information regarding a study suggesting that exposure to the drug in the first trimester of pregnancy may be linked with an increased risk of Paxil birth defects involving cardiac problems. Paxil side effects continue to be studied and analyzed.
